Your Daily Fix

Open Question

hardwood floors

Q: To seal or not to seal?

I'm having my white-oak hardwood floors refinished. How would you recommend they be finished? Every floor guy has a different answer, and it's very confusing! Should we seal first? And how many coats of poly?

Tip Of The Day

To prevent the porous end grain of a board from absorbing too much wood stain—and becoming much darker than the face and edges of the board—mix one part varnish with three parts mineral spirits. Brush a light coat of the mixture onto the end grain, let it dry, then apply the stain. The thinned varnish partially seals the end grain to reduce but not totally eliminate stain penetration.
